Health Care Reform7/27/2009

Right now, Congress is trying to put together a Health Care Reform Bill. There seems to be a big rush to get something done before the August recess. Perhaps we should slow down and take a look at something that might cost $1 Trillion. Within the last 12 months, we have already have had two government rescue packages costing $1.7 Trillion dollars, an Omnibus Spending bill with $400 billion in pork spending. Our annual budget deficit will top $1 Trillion dollars for years to come. Gov. Mitt Romney said “We might want to go slow on this Health Care Reform. We cannot afford too many Trillion dollar mistakes.”

Many people may want cheaper health care, but they may not be aware of what they pay now as a percentage of healthcare. Grace-Marie Turner of the Galen Institute, reports the average American is paying an average of $400 a month on healthcare. (they may THINK they are spending $100 - $200). Someone ELSE pays $84 of every $100, (the employer, insurance company, the government). That’s $336 out of the monthly figure of $400 that is NOT being paid by the individual American. The government is already greatly involved with healthcare with 46 percent of the health care dollars and regulations. We do not really have a free market healthcare system. Everything in the marketplace is rationed to some degree. The question we should ponder is : “Should healthcare be rationed by price or by politics? “Price will produce a rational allocation of resources.” (Source: George Will www.jewishworldreview.com, June 28, 2009)

Obama’s rhetoric needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The president wants to cut healthcare spending by adding $1 Trillion to healthcare spending. He said “health-care decisions will not be made by government”…just the new Federal Health Board. The president will “get the politics out of health care” by putting it under government control. “Obama says he will not “add to the deficit” to fund health care…” but the Democratic bill in Congress leaves $550 billion unfunded. (Source: Dick Morris, www.dickmorris.com/blog/2009/07/23 While Obama’s plan claims to promote lower cost, the head of the Congressional Budget Office said that health care cost will increase as a result of the democratic plan. Spending will increase $1 Trillion, while patients and doctors will have fewer choices and less control over their own health care.

Kevin Brady (R-Texas) asked that a chart be made that goes over the democratic bill provision by provision and identify all the new agencies that would be needed to make their plan work. There would be 31 new agencies, commissions and mandates that would come between the patient and their doctors. “The truth’s a killer, isn’t it? Brady said. “It is complicated and what’s frustrating and frightening is that this isn’t in place of the current bureaucracy, this is on top of it. Please contact your Congressman and both Senators and tell them to slow down and do health care reform right. Perhaps we could focus on just those who need health care, not those who don’t want it (a large percentage of the uninsured). Perhaps the government could provide free clinics and save the uninsured the need to use expensive and slow moving Emergency Rooms, when all they have is a cut, or a fever, or the flu. We’ve already spent our grandchildren’s money, let’s slow down before we spend our great grandchildren’s money. ( https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml)
